Affected catchments: where does Nutrient Neutrality apply?

Nutrient Neutrality applies in catchments draining to protected sites with unfavourable nutrient conditions. New developments in these catchments must offset their nitrogen or phosphorus load before planning permission is granted. Click any catchment for detail.

The shaded polygons show each surface-water catchment, the upstream drainage area that affects the protected site, not the protected site itself. A small SAC can therefore have a much larger catchment, often tens of thousands of hectares.

Nutrient Neutrality allows for permitted development on protected sites without negatively affecting the wildlife’s condition. We use suitable mitigation measures to remove additional nutrient loads in wastewater and surface water. Nutrient Neutrality covers surface water to main networks, drainage and septic tanks.

Nutrient pollution is causing a large environmental issue across natural landscapes throughout England. Nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrogen can greatly affect wildlife by increasing the growth of particular plants and shrubs. This creates “unfavourable conditions” for plant life which is called eutrophication.
